Introduction
Brief description of the history of healthcare
1930 until current year 2016 has been jam-packed full of events in history in regards to
the healthcare field. The stale cold walls of the hospital of yesterday were littered with lengthy
stays including lack of respect and lack of prevention. Patient segregation, long stays,
introduction of nurse practitioners, and the right to be involved in your own health care.
Many of us don’t think about the impact of segregation but during the early 20th century
race until the 1960’s, religion, gender all determined your care and service in the healthcare
setting. Floors, sections and wings segregated these patients and even the care and better
amenities provided to white patients was a fact. During the 1970’s an issue that burdened our
hospitals until this point was lengthily stays, until this time some women stayed in the hospital
for up to 10 days when giving birth to a child, and a simple hernia surgery could have a patient
hospitalized for four days which now is an outpatient service (Leonard, 2014). The 1970’s also
brought about the option to see a nurse practioner. Due to doctor’s bust schedules and their
offices growing the need allowed for nurse practioners to offer care under doctor’s provisions. In
2003 rules were updated and tightened again in 2011 (Leonard, 2014).
The final change I would like to note is patient empowerment. Leonard (2014), “If you
were a married woman with cancer in the 1950s or ’60s, there was a chance you wouldn’t be
informed of your diagnosis – though your husband likely would be. Some physicians felt that
knowing you could have a potentially negative or life-threatening diagnosis could hurt patients’
psychological health, and therefore affect their prognosis, Kernahan says (Hospital of Yesterday:
The Biggest Changes in Health Care). In today’s healthcare model patient awareness,
involvement and honesty is most important. FACILITY DESIGN OVERVIEW 3 Differentiate the types of health care facilities- Kathleen
