Our first Debate Journal will be due next Friday, so it is as good a time as any to go over some key ideas to help you write a good one! First off, look at this debate journal as a chance to share your views on the particular issue we looked at: (social media). Feel free to look at the debate in your own unique way. Pick out the parts of the documentary you found interesting and run with that! Basics of the Debate Journal: •Foremost, it should tie into the documentary we watched. Therefore you need to introduce the documentary in your 1st or 2nd paragraph. (i.e. FRONTLINE’s 2014 documentary, Generation Like, explores the incredible influence that social media has over the lives of young people today. •Work to frame the issue or debate at hand in your first couple of paragraphs. Really define the issue for the reader. Give them the history/background/context needed to become interested and invested in your essay. •Give definition(s) where necessary. Like, How might we define social media today? •Once you have framed the debate, then start thinking about how you are going to tie together two other sources into your essay. These can be scholarly or news sources, but they must be credible and reliable. •The goal is you will triangulate your sources into an interesting mix that shows the nuances of this complex subject. Your paper will be much more interesting for having looked at sources other than just the documentary. You can find sources that: â—¦Illuminate aspects within the documentary â—¦Conflict/disagree with aspects â—¦Confirm aspects •It is up to you to figure out what you find most interesting. Everyone will have their own unique take on this! •Avoid the use of pronouns like I, me, my and We, our, us except where you are relevant. •Have a thesis! Support your thesis throughout with good, strong body paragraphs. •Consider opposing viewpoints in a paragraph near the end. •Conclude your debate journal by restating your thesis, summing up main ideas, and closing out with a final thought. •Paper should be 3 pgs. Sources (Total of 3) should be cited in MLA Style at the end. Documentary has been cited for you in an announcement.
