Directions: Read the five items below and address each question (underlined) in 6-8 sentences. Your complete response should be approximately 500-800 words, typed and double spaced . Do not repeat the question material in your answers. 1. Matheson’s Button, Button explores the ideas of personal profit and loss at the expense of others in an uncanny way. Now that you have read the story and viewed a film adaptation (The Box), in what ways are these works commentaries on American capitalism? Use specific details from the works to support your ideas. 2.Unlike the short story, The Box includes the supernatural in a way that adds more depth to the original story. In your opinion, did this addition make the movie more interesting (entertaining) or creepy (disturbing)? Which version do you prefer? Explain why using details as support. 3.In both the story and the film, the wife (the woman) is the one who pushes the button which brings about the catastrophe; this is reminiscent of the story of Adam and Eve where Eve takes the forbidden fruit which leads to the fall of humanity. What is the main point here? Do you agree with this portrayal of women? Why or why not? 4.Imagine that you were one of the central characters (Arthur or Norma) and discuss what you think you would have done (similarly or differently). Would you have pushed the button? Would you make the same sacrifices? Why or why not? 5. The idea of a blood (human) sacrifice for profit is explored in the story and film in imaginary ways. However, some critics believe that blood sacrifices are real and take place today in the entertainment industry, business, marriages, politics, etc. Do you agree? Why or why not? Give examples to support your ideas. See links below as a reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?& https://www.youtube.com/watch?&
