TOPIC: Comparison essay
TYPE: Essay (any type)
: 17.02.2017 19:52
REQUIREMENT You are required to: • Decide upon an accounting or economics subject that interests you. • Choose 3 different academic abstracts to your first submission that differ suitably in their quality. • Appraise their suitability to help further your knowledge upon your chosen subject area. You are expected to cover many areas but as a guide you can consider some of the ideas below to help you construct a comparison document in the form of a short essay: • Were the abstracts well or poorly written? How? In what ways? Compare them. • Are they useful? (Of course, you will have to read the articles to determine this completely). • Did you learn anything from these articles? • Are the abstracts pitched to the right level (for your use as a first year student)? • Are they too in-depth or use too technical language? • Are the sources good sources or rated as poor academic sources? • You should describe the process by which you chose the three articles. • You should suggest how you might improve your search for relevant articles next time. • How did you use any facilities offered by the University? You need to construct an essay that is no longer than 1500 words. You must include all three academic abstracts in an appendix to the essay, but these are not included in the word count. You should use the feedback given to you on your first assessment extensively to help you succeed with this attempt. You may structure this essay in any way, but it is essential that you cover some of the content mentioned above. It is your choice as to which parts to include. Check the Assessment Criteria also – this is what you will be graded upon. Essentially you have to ensure that you achieve two main things within your essay: 1. Compare the abstracts and comment on their academic quality 2. Think about the process you used to find and use the abstracts A good essay style will bring better grades, but style is something that you will learn to improve over the course of your three years of study. You will receive formative feedback on seminar tasks which will include writing draft essays, but this feedback will only be given where genuine attempts to engage have been undertaken. Spelling, grammar, style, substance, structure and referencing will be taken into account within your essay – it is important to get these basic skills right at this stage of your studies. You will be given more detail throughout the semester and many opportunities to practice and build towards these skills. When submitting your assignment through Turn-it-in you must include a header page and the assignment checklist included at the end of this assignment brief. The header page should state the title of the assignment and the word count for your work. LEARNING OUTCOME TO BE ASSESSED Learning Outcome 1 • Understand effective academic or business research choices and to make comparisons between different academic information summaries. You should also ensure you perform other wider reading that is academically relevant, robust and current. Any Web based sources that you additionally use must be academically appropriate; Wikipedia and other ‘pedia’ sources are not acceptable. The balance of your sources should be weighted towards non-web based academic sources. 1. The assignment should be focussed and remain focussed on addressing the assignment requirements. Digressing to other topic or subject areas will impede the effectiveness of your assignment in assessing the assignment brief, which in turn will restrict the potential grade of your assignment. 2. Your assignment should be suitably structured to ensure a coherent and logical flow. Ensure that you think about the structure of your essay – you should build this in a logical way. You should include a header page and a reference page. 3. The assignment brief requires academically comparing abstracts This involves not just comparing the content of the abstract itself, but also an element of critically evaluating the level of the articles themselves; think about their relevance and suitability for your studies and be prepared to challenge their aptness. Work that is purely descriptive will restrict the potential grade of your assignment. 4. Your assignment should include the word count on the header page. There is a margin of tolerance of 10% either way of the required word tolerance. Work submitted which falls outside the specified tolerances will find that their grade reflects that outcome. 5. All assignments must be typed in Arial or MS Reference Sans Serif or Verdana font style and a minimum font size 12.
