After acceptance of order, I will provide you the articles on which you’re suppose to annotate and get information from. Reread the selections from the Zhuangzi in Zhuangzi: Basic Writings and write a short essay on Zhuangzi’s representation of Confucius. Is Confucius a wise man or fool? Or is he sometimes the one and sometimes the other? Or something in between? In general, what Daoist themes are illustrated in the praise or criticism of Confucius? For example, say you choose to discuss the conversation between Duke Ai and Confucius (pp. 67ff.). You might note that at the end, Duke Ai says that Confucius and he “are not subject and ruler,†but “friends in virtue.†Why does he say that? What themes of the Zhuangzi or of Daoism are illustrated in the conversation between Confucius and the Duke? Are there Confucian themes illustrated in this conversation? In the essay (perhaps in its conclusion) consider whether the Confucius of the Zhuangzi is a Confucian in any real way. That is, are there genuine Confucian concerns reflected in Zhuangzi’s portrayal of Confucius? Or is the Confucius of Zhuangzi entirely a Daoist creation? Format Details: Type the essay, double-spaced. If you do use any sources other than Oxtoby et al. and the Zhuangzi (you won’t need to do so and I’d rather you didn’t), give bibliographic references to these at the end. Although I discourage the use of internet sources because they are often unreliable, if you do use them, be certain to cite them and to include them in your bibliography. Use parenthetical notation when you quote or cite a passage from the Zhuangzi (e.g., Zhuangzi, p. 25). As usual, the essay should be 3-4 pages long. Late Essays: We will accept late essays until the graded essays are posted. However, unless you have made an another arrangement in advance of the due date, there will be a penalty for lateness. Grading Criteria: The grading criteria will be the same as those stated on the first essay prompt.
