How did it develop? What size of ensemble is used to play this style? What are the instruments used in bop bands? What individual players, and ensembles stand out as major contributors to bop? Students should know the contributions of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon, Kenny Clarke, & Max Roach. Was Be-bop popular? How does bop compare to swing? What seems to be the common pattern or order of musical events in be-bop style songs? Students should be able to describe the difference between a be-bop solo improvisation and a typical swing style solo improvisation. Preparation: Do the required reading and listening. Of special interest are: the selections by Art Tatum, Django Reinhardt, and Charlie Christian although not yet officially be-bop, all feature a more vertical approach to improvisation – thus they are considered precursors to bop; the be-bop music as featured in all the Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie tracks, students will notice how fast the tempo of the songs are, how complex the rhythms employed by the soloist are, and how the choice of notes used in the improvisations seems to be further away from the chords (harmony) of the song; and speaking of being further away – when students listen to the Thelonious Monk examples, it will be most evident that Monk was a very unique musician and intriguing composer, he is in his own realm of music expression. Read, listen, listen again, and enjoy!
