write Descriptive writing ? The first rule of description is, "Show, Don't Tell." But, what does this mean? How is one to "show" something in writing? Rely on your senses. Think about what you see, hear, smell, feel, and even taste! Don't use "ing" verbs. Ex. The ballerina was dancing across the stage. ("dancing" is a vague verb that can accommodate any number of movements). Consider, The ballerina pirouettes clumsily across the uneven concrete stage and behind the tattered faux-satin curtain. Notice the difference in the previous sentences...how did I get here? I split the sentence into the subject side and the verb side. This allowed me to view each part of the sentence independent from the other parts. In doing so, I can concentrate my description on just the ballerina, just her movement (pirouette vs. dancing), or just the stage. In other words, just the subject, just the verb, or just the direct object. Comparison is a powerful tool when describing something to someone who is unfamiliar with your subject matter. There are several types of comparisons available to you, ranging from metaphor, to simile, to personification, to the more complex controlling metaphor. Please try to include some in your writing where appropriate, but be careful not to overuse, as this is quite common.
