Topic and Research Question
Topic: For my historical event analysis, I have chosen to focus on Brown vs. Board of Education (1954) where desegregation began with children in elementary school. Where all children in public schools were now equal.
Research Question: Why did Chief Justice Earl Warren decide that this was the time to make this decision?
Search Terms and Sources
Search terms that I have used in my research so far include Christian, S. G. Brown v. Board of Education: 1954 held that segregated schools were unconstitutional, violating the equal protection of the Fourteenth Amendment. With a second primary source from prior history: Appeal from the United States district court for the district of Kansas. In these two sources they provide similar information on how the system works and how the case was handled.
One secondary source is Remembering Brown v. Board of Education: this month marks the 50th anniversary of the landmark decision eliminating the separate-but-equal doctrine. This excerpt, from the book All Deliberate Speed, examines the initial resistance by the local, state, and federal governments.
Why is this event significant? This is significant because it changed history. It made a significant difference in 1954 and it made a difference for many centuries after. Diversity is changing in many schools.
What are the similarities and differences in the content of your sources? In this research, the similarity between both sources is the fact that they both speak about the case and in some detail about how it was handled. In terms of the differences, one of the reasons why I picked these resources is because it provides straight-to-the-point information as to how the case is based on the decisions made, while the other resource focuses more on the families affected at the time of the hearing.
What makes them appropriate and relevant for investigating your event? Providing the closest description possible of the case and how the Brown family felt and what they had to endure.
What was your thought process when you were searching for sources? My thought process for searching was to get as much information on the case to understand why it had been filed in court and what families were affected.
How did you make choices? I made these choices about the resources in order to provide this information as well as answer my question about this research.
In other words, what would you like to know more about? It would be interesting to know more about how this made a bigger movement for diversity and ethnicity in today's society.
Thesis
In Brown v. Board of Education (1954) African American students were segregated by the color of their skin. Violation of their 14th amendment right to equality. During this period, Chief Justice Warren questioned the segregation of students in public schools and the reasons for it. At this point in history, color separation was a significant factor in their communities and the world. While this event seemed not significant to many, Chief Justice Warren made history and paved the way for change in how people saw races and colors.
